Science: Evolution and Intellignet Design
For the past few weeks in science class we have been learning about the controversy surrounding evolution. Because of this we watched a video called Evolution in Trail. It was about a trial held in Dover, Denver debating if “Intelligent Design” is a science and should be thought in schools. In this trial there was a council for Evolution and one for Intelligent Design.
To my understanding Evolution is change between living beings from billions of years and generations. That means that if a species started out the same, one might have a mutation or something different about it. That one being would reproduce and that “something different” would be passed down from generation to generation. That whole species could possibly evolve into a whole another species. Another example of this would be if a thousand years ago, everyone was born with brown hair until someone was born with blonde hair. And maybe as years passed blonde hair started to get more popular. And even years after that blonde hair would be close to being normal as well as brown hair. This means that the one person with blonde hair changed the hair color of a big percent of the species. Evolution is just a theory, although we do have a lot of evidence that it exists.
Charles Darwin’s theory states that species evolved through a process called natural selection. Natural selection means that id one being has a specific trait that could save it or help it survive, that same trait would be passed on from generation to generation.
Intelligent Design (also called ID) is in my opinion not a scientific theory. It basically means that the world was created by an “intelligent cause” billions of years ago. This is not exactly creationism because it is believed that evolution still exists. Intelligent Design does not believe that the universe was created in seven days but though billions of years. ID is very similar to creationism but still involves evolution.
From watching the video in class, I have a very strong opinion that Intellignt Design was invented just to have an alturnate meaning to creationism. In the video, ones of the books the evoltion council used as their evidence was called “Pandas and People”. The video showed a definition of the word creationism in the rough draft version of the book. They then showed the final draft definition of the word and he book gave the exact same definition excent the word “creationism” was replaced with the word “Inteligent Design”. This shows that creationism and Inteligent Design are in my opinion the exact same thing.
